St Peregrine

Who Was St Peregrine, the Patron Saint of Healing and Hope?

There are moments in life when the body falters and fear quietly settles in. It is in these moments that many turn to St. Peregrine, a saint known for comfort, endurance, and miraculous healing.

St. Peregrine Laziosi is widely recognized as the patron saint of those suffering from serious illness, especially cancer. His story is not one of perfection, but one of transformation, humility, and grace.

St. Peregrine was not always a man of faith.

As a young man in 13th-century Italy, he was known for being rebellious and even hostile towards the Church. In one moment that would define his life, he struck a priest, a man later revealed to be St Philip Benizi.

Instead of reacting with anger, Philip responded with calm and forgiveness.

This single act changed the course of Peregrine’s life forever.

Peregrine was so deeply moved that he turned away from his former life and devoted himself to God, eventually becoming a Servite priest. He then lived a life of prayer, penance, and quiet service.

Later in life, Peregrine developed a severe disease in his leg, believed to be cancer. The condition worsened to the point where amputation was recommended.

The night before his scheduled surgery, he spent hours in prayer.

And something truly extraordinary happened.

He fell into a deep sleep and dreamed that Christ touched and healed his leg.

When he awoke…the cancer was gone.

Because of this miracle, St. Peregrine became a symbol of hope in the face of illness.

People across the world now turn to him when facing Cancer, Chronic illness, physical suffering, and emotional or spiritual trials.

He is not just a saint of miraculous cures, but one of endurance, surrender, and quiet strength.

Why Pray to St. Peregrine?

The choice to pray to St. Peregrine is a deeply personal one.

It is not always about asking for a cure, but perhaps about asking for the strength to endure, for peace in uncertainty, for trust in God’s will, and for comfort during difficult times.

In times when answers feel far away, his story reminds us that healing often comes in ways which we do not expect.

St. Peregrine’s life is a reminder that no one is beyond transformation…and that no situation is without hope.

Even in suffering, there can be grace.

Even in uncertainty, there can be peace.

And sometimes—when we all feel lost—healing comes in ways we never saw coming.

A Prayer to St. Peregrine For Healing and Strength

O great St. Peregrine, you who were called the “mighty” and the “wonder Worker,” because of the many miracles obtained through your intercession—

You endured suffering with patience, and trusted in God even in the darkest hour.

When your own body was afflicted with illness, you turned not to despair, but to prayer—and through the mercy of Christ, you were healed.

I come before you now, seeking your intercession.

Pray for me, that I may be given strength in this trial, peace in uncertainty, and courage in the face of fear.

If it be God’s will, ask that I may be granted healing—in body, mind, or spirit.

But above all, help me to trust, to endure, and to remain close to God thorough all things.

St Peregrine, gentle guide of the suffering, pray for me.

Amen.
