How to Pray the Rosary

A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

The rosary is a form of prayer that combines spoken prayer with meditation. Using the beads as a guide, it helps bring rhythm, focus, and structure to your prayer.

If you’re new to the rosary, it may feel like a lot at first, but it becomes natural with time
.

---

1. Begin with the Sign of the Cross

Holding the crucifix, make the Sign of the Cross and say:
“In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

---

2. Apostles’ Creed

Still holding the crucifix, pray the Apostles’ Creed.

---

3. Our Father

On the first large bead, pray the Our Father.

---

4. Three Hail Marys

On the next three beads, pray three Hail Marys.
These are often offered for faith, hope, and charity.

---

5. Glory Be

Pray the Glory Be.

---

6. Announce the First Mystery

Before each decade, announce the mystery you are meditating on.

There are four sets of mysteries:
Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious, and Luminous.

---

7. Our Father

On the next large bead, pray an Our Father.

---

8. Ten Hail Marys (One Decade)

On the next ten beads, pray a Hail Mary on each bead while meditating on the mystery.

---

9. Glory Be+ Optional Fatima Prayer

After the decade, pray the Glory Be.
Optionally, include the Fatima Prayer.

---

10. Repeat for All Five Decades

  • Each rosary includes five decades, each with a different mystery.

  • Which Mysteries Are Prayed Each Day?

  • Each rosary includes five decades, and each decade is paired with a mystery, which is a moment from the life of Jesus and Mary.

  • There are four sets of mysteries, and each day of the week is traditionally associated with one set. This gives a gentle rhythm to the prayer, allowing you to reflect on different parts of Christ’s life throughout the week.

    11. Closing Prayers

After the final decade, pray the Hail Holy Queen and any additional closing prayers.

    ---

    12. Sign of the Cross

End with the Sign of the Cross.

    ---

Understanding the Parts of the Rosary

Where you begin with the Sign of the Cross and Apostles’ Creed.

    The Introductory Beads
One large bead (Our Father), three small beads (Hail Marys), next pray the Glory Be; and the next large bead (Our Father).

    The Decades
A decade is a group of ten beads:
One Our Father + ten Hail Marys.

    The Mysteries
Moments from the life of Jesus and Mary that you reflect on during each decade.

    The Centerpiece
Connects the rosary and marks the transition into the decades.

    A Note for Beginners:

The rosary is not about perfection.
